Adventureland Park Internship

Bar & Events Intern

As the Bar & Events Intern I have rotated in four different positions that have helped me understand the Hospitality Industry. I would be scheduled as Park Supervisor, Water Park Supervisor, Cabana Manager, and work as a bartender in our VIP lounge. This summer has taught me a lot about teamwork, the importance of communication, and what skills I need to possess in order to be successful in this industry.

Teamwork is essential when working in this industry. This is not an industry where you can only rely on yourself to complete the job. I felt that teamwork at Adventureland is crucial when working in certain job positions, especially in the cabana department. This summer has been a challenge only because we were extremely short-staffed in the beginning. Similar to other companies, it was hard finding potential employees that we eager to work and that could have enough availability to be on the schedule. Since we are a department that handles liquor, our selection of employees was slim due to having to be 18 or older.

Communication is another huge aspect of this industry.  My bosses have always encouraged us to have open communication with them and to not be afraid to ask questions. It was easy to be able to ask my bosses for assistance, advice, or about any issues that we may have had with employees or guests. I want to be bale to have the same qualities that they have when it comes to communication and use in my future career.

Lastly, I have a better understanding about what skills I need to improve on to be successful in this industry. Some of the skills I want to continue to improve on are communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. As I mentioned above communication is one of the most important skills to have and I am constantly improving my skills when I am at Adventureland. My leadership skills are being tested especially when I am working in the Cabana Office. I want all my host and hostess to be able to have equal amount of work and make sure that one person is not doing all the work. We have over 30 cabanas that we supervise and it can be difficult to keep everyone motivated. Lastly, my problem-solving skills have definitely improved since I first started. I am able to handle customer complaints and find a resolution or I am able to fix a situation that may happen in the bars in the park and waterpark.

This is a summer that I will remember for the rest of my life. I have developed great relationships with the people that I work with and I am looking forward to see what the next step in my career is. I will constantly work on improving my skills to prepare me for my future career and continue to understand how essential teamwork is in this industry.
